Naomi awakened from a ten year spiritual slumber asking herself, ” how long have I been asleep?” We should all ask ourselves the same question.
There was a man of Bethlehem in Judah who had planned to live for just a short time in the land of Moab.
His name was Elimelech (my God is King); his wife Naomi (full/pleasant) and two sons Mahlon (sickly) and Chilion (frail).
Then Elimelich died and Naomi was left with her two sons . They took Moabite women as wives; Orpah (back of the neck) and Ruth (to saturate; to water). They lived there about 10 years and then both Mahlon and Chilion also died and Naomi grieved the loss of her two children and husband.
When Naomi awakened and from a spiritual sleep and from grieving the loss of her family she decided to return to Judah for she had heard in the land of Moab that the Lord had visited His people in giving them food. Naomi and her daughters-in-law began their journey from Moab to Judah, traveling the Kings Highway, ascending Mount Nebo.
The three of them, standing together on Mt. Nebo, might have been in the same place Moses was standing as The Lord showed him all the land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh and all the land of Judah as far as the western sea and the Negev and the plain in the valley of Jericho as far as Zoar (Deut. 34).
This is the same place that the Lord told Moses:
“This is the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob saying: ‘I will give it to your descendants.”
Could this be the spot that Naomi turned to her daughters and told them to return to their Mothers’ house? Then blessing them to return as she went forward to Judah.
Orpah left, going back to her people and her gods, and did not return. However, Ruth clung to Naomi saying:
Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following You; for where you go, I will go and where you lodge I will
Lodge. Your people shall be My people and your God my God. Where you die I will die and there I will be buried. Thus may the Lord do to me and worse, if anything but death parts you and me:
Ruth chose to go forward with God choosing His Righteousness and her story is told over and over again today. Ruth became wife to Boaz, mother to Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David…
Question: Have you awakened from your spiritual slumber?
It is time to leave behind the things of the past.
It is time to enter into the rest of the Lord so that you can enter into the REST of the Lord!
Be blessed, Linda W.
